ALBANY — The county reported 64 new coronavirus cases Sunday - at least a one day reprieve from the massive three-digit case county Albany County saw the day before.

On Saturday Albany County recorded 147 new cases of coronavirus -- the highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic eight months ago. The explosion in newly reported infections has unsettled some local officials as they say front line workers are wearing down.

A third of the new cases reported Sunday were from UAlbany, the county said. The university is requiring students to test for coronavirus before going back home for Thanksgiving. UAlbany decided to go virtual two weeks before the holiday as it saw positive tests continuing to increase.

The College of Saint Rose announced Sunday that it has decided to end in-person instruction early, moving to remote instruction starting Tuesday. Originally it was going to continue in-person instruction until Thanksgiving break started next week. Residence halls at Saint Rose will remain open, though dining services will move to take-out only. All in-person activities, and athletic activities, will end for the semester on Tuesday as well. Although it only has eight cases connected to the campus, the college decided to be cautious considering the viral spread going throughout the community.

New York reported Sunday that 2.75 percent of people tested statewide had the virus. Deaths also continue to inch up, with 30 coronavirus deaths reported Sunday.

Albany County's five-day average for new daily positives decreased slightly Sunday from 92.4 to 91.6.

Among the new positive cases, 32 had close contact with positive cases, one reported traveling out of state, six are healthcare workers or residents of congregate settings, and 25 did not have a clear source of infection at this time. County health officials believe not all people are being truthful about their activities leading up to their positive tests - which is the reason why a clear source of infection can not be determined.

There were three new hospitalizations to report overnight Saturday, but the number of Albany County residents currently hospitalized due to the virus remains at 38. There are now eight patients in the ICU, down from nine Saturday.

The Albany County Department of Health is also advising anyone who went to the Olive Garden on Wolf Road in Colonie on Sunday, November 8 between and 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. to call them because of possible virus exposure. Call the County Department of Health at (518) 447-4659.
