The Forum recently published a letter examining the psychology of how we as a people should deal with the coronavirus. Dr. McLean, who wrote the letter, made some good points about fairness. Fairness is very important in almost any context, but when sacrifices are being made, fairness is doubly important.
So, is it fair that some people aren't wearing masks and social distancing? In connection with that question, though, is there scientific proof that masks and social distancing are effective in limiting the spread of COVID or any other contagious virus? Are these mandates actually saving lives? Are these mandates worth the price that is being paid, and thus, are they fair?
Dollar wise, this war on COVID has cost the United States trillions of dollars. Human wise, the costs probably can't be measured, and few of our leaders have any desire to even think about it.

Suicides, drug and alcohol abuse are up along with serious crime. Spousal and child abuse are up. Depression, especially among the young, is up. No one even knows how everyone being masked affects the minds of the very young.
These and other negatives in connection with our war on COVID seldom are reported. Our news media is too busy bombarding us with death counts and other news designed to keep the fear level high.
Almost every country in the world has gone to war with COVID, and the outcomes are even worse in many other countries. India and other poor countries have high levels of starvation, and no one in India or anywhere else cares. We're all concentrating on stopping a virus that can't be stopped and we're oblivious to everything else.
We can't win this war against a virus, we don't even know what winning is. “Stop the spread”--is that a strategy? In World War I, for many generals, attrition was a strategy. To those generals, blood was cheap. Our leaders today have that same mindset. Most leaders in this world aren't fighting a war against a virus, they're fighting a war against humanity, and they're not concerned about losses.
If we're worried about fairness, what sacrifices are our leaders making? The answer would be none. Has any governor, mayor or national leader anywhere declared bankruptcy or committed suicide because of his losses and sacrifices during this pandemic?
Forget about the word fair, think about the words freedom and liberty. Dictators want us to be fair, fearful and under their thumb, with no freedom and no liberty.
