Questions about the destructive forest fires

Like many of us, I have family and friends living here in Loveland and in the Lyons area who were threatened by the various wildfires that ate away at the surrounding forests, including the Cameron Peak, East Troublesome Creek, CalWood, and Lefthand Canyon fires.

In analyzing why we are just now facing these terrible fires, some people focus on the climate, contending that we must eliminate our widespread use of fossil fuels, assuming this will in some way create a less-warm and less-arid environment.

I think answers to the following questions are perhaps even more important than climate in preventing wildfires. First, how can we prevent the enormous build-up of dead trees and other fuels within our forests? And second, how can we identify the people who are starting these destructive fires?

I can remember the extensive pine-bark beetle infestations that turned our beautiful forests from green to red a few years ago, and the discussions about how it would be too expensive to remove these dead trees. It may also be asked what kind of mentality would cause a person to set fires that could cause hundreds of people to lose their homes, animals, businesses, or their very lives? They must either be enemies of the U.S. or people completely overcome with hatred of themselves or others.

Quality of education has declined

Since the government has gotten involved in education, the quality of education has gone down. Some schools are failing. Parents need to watch what is being taught in school.

Throwing money at it hasn’t helped. The teachers union controls K-12 education. The teachers union won’t fire bad teachers nor reward good teachers. The teachers union does not like school choice. Teachers donate to the Democrat Party to further the teachers union agenda.

Children are not being taught the basics like how to make change. Some kids need to learn responsibility when it is not taught at home. The older kids need to learn civics, which includes three co-equal branches of government, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It would not hurt to learn the 10 Commandments, where some of our laws come from. They need to learn American history, the good and the bad. The good history so they can learn why our country is the best in the world. The bad history so we don’t repeat it.

If Christianity can’t be taught, no religion should be taught. If religion can’t be taught we should not be telling children how to think. Three R’s are good. English is the official language. Proper English shows that you have been educated. Sex education should be taught to show safe sex; anything else should be handled by their parents. Science and math should be taught to keep us ahead of other countries.

School is no place for indoctrination. Our universities should place a price on their degrees and what you can expect to make back from these degrees. Professors should not indoctrinate students, and should protest on their own time. Censoring should stop, and antifa should be told to move on. If you are looking for money for students, look to university endowments. They have plenty of money.

Let’s use freedom of speech respectfully

Partisan politics in Washington are blamed for, among other things: the gridlock, getting nothing done; national division, name calling; the list goes on. We all know it. With the current election, the Opinion Page call-in people are replicating the partisan political views, not with intelligent reasoning but with emotions, using name-calling and other negative comments.

Freedom of speech is one our Founding Fathers’ best decisions. In our local area, let’s use that precious freedom to respectfully express our thoughts and opinions to educate the readers, rather than duplicate Washington politics. It has to start somewhere. Why not here?
