LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - After a few nice days across the state, winter will slap us in the face on Wednesday with cold, snow, and wind as a powerful low pressure system slides through the area. Blizzard Warnings, Winter Storm Warnings, and Winter Weather Advisories cover most of the state through the day on Wednesday.
Very strong winds are expected across the state on the backside of the low pressure system sliding through the area. North winds should be sustained between 20 and 40 MPH with wind gusts likely reaching 60 to 65 MPH at times today for areas in High Wind Warnings. Areas across eastern Nebraska may see slightly lower top end wind gusts, but we’re still expected to see gusts up to 50 to 55 MPH.
Temperatures will be falling throughout the day on Wednesday and by the afternoon, temperatures should settle into the 20s for most of the state, but when combined with the very strong winds will feel much colder with wind chills in the single digits to lower teens. Past sunset, wind chills could potentially drop below zero into Thursday morning.
Some areas of light rain are possible in south central and southeastern Nebraska early on Wednesday morning as temperatures continue to fall - this could lead to a flash freeze as temperatures will continue to plummet through the morning. Any areas of rain will quickly turn over to snow through the morning with all snow expected into Wednesday afternoon. Snow is expected to end by Wednesday evening across the state. Total snowfall amounts are expected to be highest in northeastern Nebraska where 3″ to 6″ of snow is possible. Further to the south, 1″ to 3″ of snow is expected into central and southeastern Nebraska. For Lincoln, up to around 1″ of snow is expected. Keep in mind, because of the very strong winds, while we may “get” around an inch of snow in Lincoln, we may not “see” 1″ of accumulation when it’s all said and done.
Christmas Eve (Thursday) will be cold and breezy before temperatures rebound back to above average for Christmas Day afternoon and Saturday. Don’t get used to it though as another cold front arrives cooling us down for Sunday and early next week. There is a small chance of rain and snow Sunday. Snow looks to also be possible Tuesday into the middle of next week as a storm system moves into and through the region.
