On June 14, 1777, the second Continental Congress approved the design of the flag of the United Sates of America. One hundred forty-six years later Freedom's oldest resident, Hazel Cross, was born. Over the years, Hazel has worked as town clerk, and spent some time working at the Freedom Post Office. She has also been a member of the Dirigo Grange for 81 years.
Hazel was such a pleasure to speak with, and hearing stories of how the town used to be was really interesting. She mentioned that she recalls a light in the center of town that needed to be lit each evening. I asked if she had any advice on how to live as long as she has. She said, "I don't think there is any secret to it. The good Lord controls a lot of things, you know." I could not agree more.
The Board of Selectmen met Dec. 28 at 6 p.m., as usual, barring holidays. Solid Waste Representative Phil Bloomstein gave a report regarding the problems of the past year regarding trash, the recycling center, and some other issues. Meredith Coffin, the alternate representative, was also present.
The Freedom Volunteer Fire Department was called to a structure fire in Unity on Dec. 28. Thankfully no one was injured.
