WAVERLY, Iowa (KWWL) - Iowa U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson (R) back in the hawkeye state for the first time since taking office.
Hinson touring all 20 counties within her district and toured Retrieving Freedom in Waverly.
Retrieving Freedom in Waverly trains service dogs for children with autism, and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder or disabilites.
Rep. Hinson hearing the need to spread the importance of service dogs.
"You think about the physical disabilities and how a service animal might help them. I'm learning about the training to help people, it's really inspiring to me," Hinson said.
One of Hinson's goals while on her district tour, showing Iowans she's ready to get to work.
"I'm not going to spend the next two years in the minority not getting anything done. I'm ready to work with anyone in the majority party and make sure we hear the priorities of Iowans and making sure we take action on those items," Rep. Hinson said.
One of the many stories told with Retrieving Freedom is that of Trent Dirks, and his service dog, Tracer.
Tracer helps Dirks do everyday activities from grocery shopping to school events with his son.
Dirks was diagnosed with PTSD and became a volunteer at Retrieving Freedom. Dirks now, holds a position within the non-profit and makes it his mission to help those who need it most.
"It impacts so many different people, on some many different levels. Tell your friends, tell your family we're here. We're here to help, everyone is welcome to stop by and check us out," Dirks said.
Rep. Hinson continued that U.S. House committees have been ratified. Hinson says "first order" of business is "budget issues," next week.
