Report: Ryan Day has 'no intention' of interviewing for NFL job - 247Sports

The coaching carousel is getting faster as the NFL regular season comes to a close. Coaching firings are impending and college coaches are getting attention for NFL jobs.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, one college coach won’t be leaving his post anytime soon. While coaches like Dan Mullen at Florida and Pat Fitzgerald at Northwestern are potential NFL candidates with wishes to get to the pros, Ohio State’s Ryan Day is out of that running.

According to Schefter, Day won’t be in the NFL in 2021.

“Coaching news….Dan Mullen of the college ranks is hoping to go to the pros as is Pat Fitzgerald. Ryan Day of Ohio State has no intention of interviewing with NFL teams,” Schefter said on NFL Countdown.

On Saturday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported Day would be a top target of the Jacksonville Jaguars if they are unable to land former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, should they part ways with current head coach Doug Marrone.

“The Jaguars won't make a firm and final decision on Marrone until after the season, but this is the expected outcome provided Jacksonville feels confident it can find Marrone's replacement,” Rapoport reported.

Day is a compelling name for the NFL ranks. He led the Buckeyes to multiple College Football Playoffs (CFP) appearances. This week, Day helped Ohio State defeat the Clemson Tigers in the CFP semifinals in convincing fashion. The Buckeyes have a January 11 date against Alabama in the national championship game.

Day is no stranger to the NFL ranks. He was a quarterback coach with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. He learned under Chip Kelly and has a good understanding of how to run NFL offenses.

He noted in November that he believes Ohio State is the best job in America and expressed his desire to stay with the program.

“I believe this is the best place in America, the best job in America,” Day said during a November press conference via ESPN reporter Adam Rittenberg.

The Jaguars have an interesting dynamic for a potential head coaching opening. The team owns the top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and has a lot of impending cap space to build around a young core of players. The roster is filled with emerging playmakers in Josh Allen, James Robinson and Laviska Shenault among others.

There is also the chance the Jaguars select a quarterback with the top pick and that could be Clemson star Trevor Lawrence if he decides do declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. Should Day reverse course and consider the position, the Jaguars could also consider Justin Fields if he enters the NFL Draft as well.
