This Day in Braves History: January 24

1973 - Warren Spahn becomes just the sixth player to be elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. Spahn received 316 of the 380 votes cast by the BBWAA. Spahn finished his career with 363 career wins including 13 20-win seasons.

2008 - The Braves avoid arbitration with reliever Rafael Soriano by signing him to a two-year, $9 million deal. Atlanta acquired Soriano from the Seattle Mariners in December of 2006 in exchange for Horacio Ramirez. He would turn in three solid seasons for the Braves posting a 2.95 ERA and a 3.39 FIP in 161 2/3 innings. Atlanta would trade Soriano to the Rays in December of 2009 in exchange for right-hander Jesse Chavez.

2013 - Atlanta acquires outfielder Justin Upton from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a seven-player deal. The Braves also acquire third baseman Chris Johnson and pitchers Randall Delgado and Zeke Spruill. The Diamondbacks receive Martin Prado, Nick Ahmed and Brandon Drury in return. Upton joins his brother B.J. who signed with Atlanta earlier in the offseason. Justin Upton will spend two seasons with the Braves hitting .267/.348/.478 with 56 home runs and a 129 OPS+. Atlanta would trade Upton to the Padres in December of 2014 along with pitcher Aaron Northcraft in exchange for left-hander Max Fried, infielder Jace Peterson and outfielders Mallex Smith and Dustin Peterson.
