McRae-Gaines Learning Center is honored to sponsor a Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School® in Selma, Alabama, June 13 through July 22, 2022.

The CDF Freedom Schools® program model is a summer and after-school literacy enrichment program designed to serve children and young adults in communities where quality academic enrichment programming is limited, cost-prohibitive, or nonexistent. In partnership with schools, faith and community-based organizations, municipalities, and colleges and universities, the CDF Freedom Schools program enhances children’s motivation to read and generates positive attitudes toward learning, while connecting the needs of children and families to appropriate resources in their communities.

McRae-Gaines Board Members and volunteers have worked since September 2020 to be able to provide the program for pre-school and primary school age children but COVID and limited space at the previous Marie Foster location caused delays. Fundraising was also an important part of sponsoring a CDF Freedom School because staff and afternoon programming must be paid at the best possible rate. Grants from Senator Malika Sanders-Fortier and the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education allowed McRae-Gaines to hire a Project Director, Site Coordinator and four Servant Leader Interns. They have also recruited local subject matter experts to provide afternoon programming that includes math and phonics, music, a science and nature project, art, history, art and physical activity. There will also be a National Day of Action on July 20, 2022 centered on the Environment, and a Field Trip to the McWane Science Center in Birmingham.

The heart of the program is the Integrated Reading Curriculum, (IRC) a research-based and multicultural curriculum that supports scholars and their families through five essential components: high quality academic and character-building enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational servant leadership development; and nutrition, health, and mental health. The CDF staff go through between 30 and 70 hours of training to deliver the curriculum.

Because registration for the CDF Freedom School® at McRae is closed, the Director, Mrs. Sadie Moss, and the Board of Directors hope to see other Freedom Schools sponsored by local Selma school systems, faith congregations and community organizations in the future. CDF offers five levels of the IRC: Pre-School (Rising Kindergartners); Level I (Kindergarten-Second Grade); Level II (Third Grade-Fifth Grade); Level III (Sixth Grade-Eighth Grade); and Level IV (Grade Nine-Grade 12). CDF also provides summer or after-school programming for Juvenile Justice Facilities.
