OAKLAND, Calif. — The Astros transferred pitcher Austin Pruitt on the 45-day injured list Friday, extinguishing almost any hope that he can contribute to the team during the 2020 season.
Pruitt’s stint is backdated to July 23 — when the Astros originally placed him on the 10-day injured list. The earliest Pruitt could be activated is Sept. 5.
“He hasn’t responded to therapy,” manager Dusty Baker said on Friday. “He’s working hard, working really hard, but sometimes your body doesn’t respond when you want it to respond.”
“I can’t say he’s done for the season, but he’s done for a while.”

Baker gave no further specifics regarding the nature of Pruitt’s injury or whether it would require surgery. The Astros transferred Pruitt to the 45-day IL to make room in their 60-man player pool for minor league free agent Chase De Jong. Players on the 45-day IL do not count against the 40-man roster or 60-man player pool.
On July 15, Pruitt exuded optimism about his prognosis. The University of Houston product acknowledged he probably would not be ready by opening day, but claimed he was “not too far behind.”
Pruitt described the injury as an “unusual” soreness in “the back of my elbow, kind of tricep area.” He started to feel it in February during spring training, but threw through it. In summer camp, Pruitt said he experienced some inflammation, leading to his slow ramp up.
Last week, general manager James Click said Pruitt was shut down from throwing after suffering a setback.
The Astros acquired Pruitt from the Tampa Bay Rays this winter in hopes he could slot into their starting rotation. Pruitt is not arbitration eligible until the 2022 season, meaning the Astros could bring him back in 2021 for near the league minimum — if he’s even healthy enough to contribute.
