Call of Duty: Warzone has started an in-game event to tie in with the series’ upcoming installment, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Warzone is a battle royale spin on the Call of Duty series that was released for free midway through March 2020. It has many of the same staples of the genre, like dropping from the sky and the shrinking safe zones, but also introduces new ideas like the Gulag, which allows eliminated players to return to the match should they win a duel to the death.

The first trailer for the upcoming Cold War game was recently released and has the American and Soviet Union conflict as the setting. It’s set to release on November 13 of this year, but Call of Duty fans can partake in an event in Warzone to tide them over and view a sneak peek. This guide will look at the steps players need to take to complete the Steps to Freedom quest in Call of Duty: Warzone.

Completing Steps to Freedom in Call of Duty: Warzone

This event changes a lot of Battle Royale rules in favor of more scavenger hunt-like objectives. There’s no circle of death closing in on players, so they can explore the map without worry. In addition, downed players will respawn instead of losing. This lets players achieve all the goals without having to reenter another match. Said goals are the four steps that appear as a checklist on the left side of the screen. This will help players keep track of what they’ve accomplished and still need to do. They must be completed in order, and players only have 15 minutes total to win; there's no time to play dead.

Collect the Map Codes

The first task is something Call of Duty players are experienced with: killing other players. When enemies die in this game mode, they will drop a folder along with their other loot. These are the Map Codes that need to be collected, and a total of five are needed to progress to the next goal. Simply take down five other players like a standard Call of Duty match, and don’t forget to pick up their folder. As stated earlier, dying does not reset progress.

Find the Key

Players will then need to find the key card somewhere on the map. An icon with a key will appear once this part starts, which will lead players towards the key card if they head in the same direction. Where the key card is located changes every game, so it won’t always be in the same location. Be sure to secure a vehicle to arrive at the key’s location more quickly. If one manages to find some form of transportation during the first step, it will save a lot of time looking for one, so don’t abandon any that are spotted.

Crack the Map Code

This next step is also like a scavenger hunt. While the key card’s exact location is given, the code cipher needed to translate the map code is only given an approximate location. A portion of the map is circled in, and the needed cipher is somewhere in that parameter. Players will need to open lootboxes to find it as if they were hunting for weapons in a regular Battle Royale. Once again, having a vehicle will allow players and their team to complete this objective as quickly as possible. When playing this game mode with a team, consider splitting up so that more ground can be combed over quicker.

Wield the Weapon

After players find the hidden code cipher, they can begin the final task called ‘Wield the Weapon’. The helpful task screen on the left also displays where it is, this time using map coordinates. Somewhere at these coordinates is a recurring Call of Duty character named Woods who, once spoken to, gives players blueprints for a new rifle they can use. If the timer begins to run out, an icon similar to the one used to find the key card appears, letting players find Woods easier.
