SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Primary day is here in Vermont and residents across the state will be heading to the polls, but in-person voting will look different.
In South Burlington, voting will look a lot like the shopping people have become accustomed to. Polling locations will feature sneeze guards, social-distancing and mandatory mask requirements. For those that forget a mask, one will be provided.
If you can’t wear one, a ballot will be brought out for you to vote outside. There will also be a one voter capacity when you step up to a voting terminal.
Donna Kinville, the South Burlington City Clerk, says in her 20 years running elections, this is one of the strangest cycles she has had to prepare for. “This election is much much different than we have ever dealt with before,” she said.
Kinville says when you put the pen to paper, there is a specific way to vote. “When you come in, you’ll be given three ballots, a Democratic, Republican, and Progressive. You get to choose one of those parties to vote, so it’s almost like a silo. You vote Democratic, you are going to vote all Democratic candidates. Republican, Republican candidates. You’re building that ballot for November and that’s what people don’t seem to comprehend sometimes. As you leave, we have a place to hand your two un-voted ballots to an official, and then you can deposit your own ballot into the tabulator,” she said.
But Kinville says they are ready. South Burlington recently held a school budget vote back in May, so she say she knows residents can handle the slight adjustments needed for safety. “It was really heartwarming to see that the city could still go through the election, still be civil, still go through the process, and still carry out their voting rights,” said Kinville.
She says you can also expect some new volunteers taking over for those from the more vulnerable population. “There are going to be a lot of new people working, so it will be interesting to see this new sense of community involvement,” said Kinville.
And she says that community involvement is what is going to get them through such a strange election cycle, even with the influx of early and absentee votes. “The lovely citizens of South Burlington who have called and said, what can we do to help, they come in they open up those outside envelopes, help us get those organized for us by districts,” said Kinville.
And as always, the badge of Democracy will be available. “Yes, we will have stickers, we have stickers,” said Kinville.
Kinville says they have been receiving votes by mail and absentee ballots already and are in the process of opening those.
South Burlington residents will vote for the third time this year on the school district’s budget $52 million budget proposal, which is an increase of $785,00 from last year. While it’s still an increase, that’s down from the a $4 million increase and a $2 million increase pitched earlier. Both budgets were rejected earlier this year.
You can also expect no major delays if you decide to come and vote in-person. The polls in South Burlington are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
