The dog days of summer began on July 3 and they end today. Ever wonder where that phrase comes from? Hint: It's not the dogs, but the second brightest star in the summer daytime sky. The ancient Greeks noticed Sirius, the Dog Star, rose and set with the sun, and theorized it was responsible for adding extra heat in July and August. Today will definitely feel like there's a heat boost going on with 90s and plenty of humidity to go around. It'll be the last such oppressively hot and humid day of this stretch as things start to cool off and dry up later tomorrow. This is a trend that will continue into the upcoming weekend.
Let's start with yesterday first: We had more coverage of showers and storms than any forecast would have predicted. I won't make that same "mistake" today.
Temperatures this morning are sitting in the low to the upper 60s with dewpoints right there, too. Another day of heat advisories is ahead with afternoon highs in the 80s and low 90s as dewpoints rise to the upper 60s and low 70s. That adds up to heat index values in the mid-90s to 100 degrees.
A cold front will slowly approach our area as we head deeper into the afternoon, which will help to touch off some showers and thunderstorms. They'll be scattered about from say 3 p.m. on and some will be on the strong side with gusty wind and very heavy rain. These look to stick around longer than usual, well into this evening. The severe threat will wane but thunder will still rumble here and thereafter sunset with heavy rains remaining.
This front will slowly push southeast tonight and overnight, which will equate to another mild to warm night with plenty of humidity and scattered showers remaining. Those showers will generally move north to south as the front goes and will be well south of Albany by daybreak. Lows overnight will range again from the low 60s to 70 degrees.
This is a bummer of a forecast for tonight, as it will hamper efforts to see the peak of the best meteor shower of the year, the Perseids. While it won't be overcast everywhere, it won't be too clear in many spots either. The moon is just under half-lit, not ideal but at least it's not full like it was last year. Look to the constellation Perseus in the northeast sky to see the point from which these appear to come, although you'll be able to see them anywhere in the sky. The forecast is for 40-50 per hour.
While tonight is the peak, there will still be some to see tomorrow night, which will provide better weather and ground conditions. Head away from the light pollution and check them out if you can!
Tomorrow into Thursday
That front will push south and out of our area through the morning tomorrow. Showers will continue to push south and will be out by lunchtime with drier air filtering in from north to south as a light northwest breeze picks up. We'll have increasing sunshine with highs in the 70s in the Adirondacks to the upper 80s down the Hudson Valley.
It'll be a more comfortable night with a noticeably less humid day on Thursday. Skies will be mostly clear with lows in the upper 50s to the mid-60s with Thursday's highs in the 70s to the middle 80s.
Friday through the weekend
The trend to cooler and less humid continues day by day. We'll have plenty of sunshine on Friday with highs again in the 70s to the mid-80s. A comfortable, cooler night for Friday night, so if you have an outdoor fire pit plan or something of the like, you're good to go.
Saturday will be a mostly sunny day with temps a couple of degrees cooler than Friday. That ball rolls into Sunday, when despite ample sunshine, Albany may fail to hit 80.
In summary, if you're not a fan of this heat and humidity, just get through today. From there, each day will be better than the one before it.
