In re: Loveland Reporter-Herald: Members call for response to social media post, 8 Aug. 2020.

Dear Commissioner Barela and Council Members Olson and Clark:

Pity Pete. Don’t you all have something better to do?

Let’s live with as much freedom as we can muster

Throughout mankind’s history it has been necessary to initiate and install authority as a control over individual desires and actions that work to an individual’s preferences while simultaneously and wrongly imposing upon the contrary preferences of neighbors and other associates.

The result has always been authoritarian rule in the form of tribal leaders, kingships, emperors, autocrats, strongmen, dictators, despots and fanatics accompanied by various forms of rigidly physical enforcement.

America was and is unique because it was commandeered by free men and women who came together voluntarily to throw off despotic rule from Europe, setting up a republic based on democratic processes and rule while keeping a tight harness on the all-too-common human traits of self-seeking advantage over others.

The greatest nation in mankind’s history resulted, and limits on individual freedom are slight in comparison with any other forms of government.

So … why is everyone so upset over the fact that America leads the world in pushing back against governmental dictates regarding the wearing of masks, limitations on formal gatherings and ordering the closures of businesses and various other forms of human enterprise?

I’m proud of our reaction. Since when has fear ruled the country, even in the face of potential death? Didn’t every war we fought end with many deaths? Yet, we plunged into them as a self-willing act of pushing back against others who wanted to limit our freedoms!

Don’t we honor highly those firemen, policemen, soldiers, doctors, nurses, construction workers, factory workers, etc., who daily face the possibility of death in pursuit of their callings?

Threat of death should not and cannot be a cause for justifying authoritarianism. Integrity, honor and bravery summit upon personal freedom. We will all taste death. Does the date of its arrival really matter all that much? Meanwhile … let’s live with as much freedom as we can muster.

Increasing Loveland’s sales tax is the right thing to do

Growing up, my father had a saying that I vividly remember: “You can lie with figures, but figures don’t lie.”

Having attended most Loveland City Council meetings for some years now and seen the presentations made by city finance staff, as well as following the CARE committee’s work, I feel I understand the realities of our situation.

I’m particularly concerned about the impact to our Fire Department and the reductions and cutbacks that may have to occur if this sales tax increase is not passed. Loveland has a very favorable national ISO rating that ultimately makes for lower property insurance rates for city residents. This could change if the city’s rating is raised due to staff cuts and station location adjustments.

I’m venturing a guess that any increase in property insurance could be greater than the projected $3.07 per week additional costs.

This is not a “sky is falling” argument. And notwithstanding the prevalent “I don’t trust government” mood today, facts are still facts.

Our Loveland community has many desirable attributes. Failure to invest, even, or especially, in a time of crisis show shortsightedness and a failure to lead. I urge support for the 1 cent tax increase, food excluded of course. Take the long view of how we want our community to thrive in the years ahead. It’s the right thing to do.
