Just about all major concours events have been cancelled through the rest of the year, but the northeast's Lime Rock Park will still offer gearheads a weekend's worth of events one month from now.
For years the historic track, tucked away in Connecticut's northwest quadrant, has featured several days of vintage racing on Friday, Saturday and Monday, while Sunday was set aside for hundreds of vintage cars in many different classes, all lined up around the track.
The four-day Lime Rock Historic Festival will feature the Concours d'Elegance and Gathering of the Marques on Sunday, Sept. 6, which will see almost 300 cars on display in judged categories along Sam Posey Straight in addition to over 800 other cars lined up around the track. The Sunday Concours is a familiar event for many vintage car clubs around New England and sees marques as diverse as Citroën and Tatra spend half a day at Lime Rock (before the inevitable thunderstorm arrives at 4:00 PM sharp).
With well over a thousand vehicles on display around the track each year, we've seen a tremendous variety of European, Japanese and American machinery in past years, and have even contributed to the French contingent by entering the event in a white Peugeot 505 station wagon. Our chariot may not have been the sole French car there that year, as around 25 Citroëns were there as well, but we did have the honor of displaying the only Peugeot that year. We're sure you'd agree that it was also the best Peugeot there. (And, in our view, we should have received a Best in Class Award for this feat, but we're willing to let bygones be bygones).
Of course, due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year's concours event — as well as the vintage racing during the four-day weekend at Lime Rock Park — will be subject to the state's regulations regarding travel and large public gatherings. The track had stayed closed for weeks earlier this spring and had reopened in a limited capacity at the end of June, but remains under a regional travel advisory along with neighboring New York and New Jersey.
Visit the Lime Rock website for the full weekend event schedule, as well as pandemic-related regional public safety information.
