The 2020 college football season has yet to start, and Jim Harbaugh and Ryan Day already have beef. Of course, that means Paul Finebam has given his two cents on that feud.
Earlier this week, sources told Dave Biddle of Bucknuts that the Big Ten coaches held a weekly conference call on Monday in which Day and Harbaugh “got into it.” In the Bucknuts post — which can be seen in its entirety here (VIP) — Harbaugh was said to have interrupted Day while he was speaking, saying that Ohio State violated rules by having on-field instruction and drills before such activities were permitted. Harbaugh also noted that Ohio State linebackers coach Al Washington was seen in a photo working with linebackers.
Following that call, Day went into a meeting with his team and told them that the Big Ten better implement a mercy rule because the Buckeyes were going to ‘hang 100’ on the Wolverines this year, per the Bucknuts report.
On Friday morning’s edition of ESPN’s ‘Get Up,’ Finebaum joined the show to discuss the developing feud between Harbaugh and Day. Though he is a very vocal critic of Harbaugh, Finebaum seemed to take the Michigan coach’s side. Still, he couldn’t resist throwing a couple backhanded compliments into his remarks.
“It feels like college football season is almost here,” Finebaum said. “That’s the first time I can make that statement in about a year. You have to applaud Jim Harbaugh. It doesn’t matter how many times he gets sand kicked in his face, he gets suckerpunched, eviscerated on the field, he keeps coming back for more. I’ve never seen anyone quite like that. For that, I admire Harbaugh. For Ryan Day, this is only his second year taking over for Urban Meyer and he’s acting like Nick Saban. It’s amazing.”
Despite his comments on the beef between the rival coaches, Finebaum hasn’t changed his opinion about what will happen between the lines. When predicting the result of the 2020 matchup, Finebaum told Michigan alumnus Jalen Rose that he thinks it’ll be another blowout in favor of Ohio State.
“Michigan is going down badly, Jalen,” Finebaum said. “I don’t know if they’ll lose by 50 but it will be close.”
The Buckeyes have won the last eight meetings between the teams, and it sounds like Harbaugh has only added fuel to their fire. With the altered 2020 Big Ten schedule, the two sides won’t have to wait long to hash it out on the field. The Wolverines and Buckeyes are slated to meet on Oct. 14 this fall, roughly one month earlier than normal.
