It’s been a fast-paced last few days for the Big Ten Conference. It began last week with the release of its modified, league-only football schedule.
But things took a drastic turn over the weekend when it was reported that the Big Ten presidents were leaning toward postponing the 2020 football season until the spring at the earliest. That sparked a nationwide players movement using the hashtag “#WeWantToPlay,” something coaches and some athletic directors joined.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day has a message for the Big Ten presidents currently deciding the fate of the league’s football campaign.
“I would say we cannot cancel the season right now,” Day said Monday on ESPN’s College Football Live program. "We have at the very least postpone it and give us a little bit of time to keep evaluating what’s been going on. If we need to take a deep breath, let’s take a deep breath. We owe it to these kids to exhaust every single option we possibly can and we go from there.”
At Ohio State, reports that the presidents are favoring canceling the 2020 season and news could come early this week, was met with much frustration. Buckeye players and coaches made it known in recent weeks how comfortable they felt with Ohio State's safety and testing protocols and indicated that if other Big Ten teams did the same, playing Power 5 college football in the Midwest and East Coast this fall would be of little issue.
With many Scarlet and Gray players and staff voicing their opinions as part of the "We Want To Play" movement, Day joined the fray on Monday afternoon. The Buckeye boss' tweet read "Swinging as hard as we possibly can right now for these players!! This isn’t over!" with the hashtag “FIGHT."
Speaking virtually to media members last week, Day made it clear that he trusts in what has been done at Ohio State and was looking forward to leading his Buckeye team in battle this fall.
“I’m comfortable with us starting training camp,” Day said. “I still think that in order to play a game, not yet. Not yet. I think the Big Ten did a wonderful job of laying out some of the stuff that, as we get into the competitive season, some of the details and protocols moving forward, but certainly there are more details to be ironed out before we go play that first game.
“But I am very comfortable with what we have going on here going into training camp. Our protocols and procedures that we shared with our team, with our coaching staff and then with our parents. I think that is really well thought out and there’s been a lot of back-and-forth there and we feel strong about that. But I would say right now we’re not quite ready to play a game yet. But I know the Big Ten and the commissioner’s office is working really hard right now to put all those details together so we all can feel strong when we get a lot of those details. But yesterday (the release of the schedule) was a great step forward for us.”
