Florida added 9,085 coronavirus cases Friday, bringing the state’s weekly coronavirus case average up for the ninth day in a row.
It was the second straight day the state added more than 9,000 cases.
Since March, 923,418 cases of the virus have been identified across Florida. About 7,552 cases are announced per day, based on the weekly average, the highest it has been since early August.
Florida processed about 129,000 coronavirus tests Thursday, with a daily positivity rate of 7.64 percent, according to the Department of Health.
The state also announced 80 coronavirus deaths. In total, 18,110 people in Florida have died from the virus. The weekly death average held steady at about 64 people announced dead per day.
Hospitalizations: About 3,420 people across Florida are hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. About 760 are in the Tampa Bay area. Hospitalizations across the state have been increasing as cases have gone upward.
About 23 percent of hospital beds and 20 percent of ICU beds are available in Florida. In Tampa Bay, about 21 percent of hospital beds and 17 percent of ICU beds are available.
Some of the largest area hospitals, like Tampa General Hospital and Morton Plant Hospital, had few or no ICU beds available as of Friday morning.
Cases that resulted in a hospitalization increased by 230 admissions.
Positivity: Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 9 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University. It is one of 45 states that doesn’t meet the World Health Organization recommendation of 5 percent or below.
Though Florida did have a positivity of about 5 percent earlier in September and October, it has risen in recent weeks. When positivity is too high, it can mean there isn’t enough testing to capture mild and asymptomatic cases.
Without those cases being identified, the virus continues to spread throughout the community and infect others.
Local numbers: Tampa Bay added 1,485 coronavirus cases and 23 deaths Friday.
Ten deaths were recorded in Hernando, five were in Citrus, three were in Pasco, two were in Hillsborough and Manatee both, and one was in Polk.
Citrus continues to lead the Tampa Bay area with the highest average weekly positivity at 10 percent. Pasco follows at 9 percent, then Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee and Polk at 8 percent and Pinellas at 6 percent.
As of the latest count, Hillsborough has 54,792 cases and 890 deaths; Pinellas has 30,286 cases and 870 deaths; Polk has 26,091 cases and 659 deaths; Manatee has 15,511 cases and 368 deaths; Pasco has 13,373 cases and 267 deaths; Hernando has 4,507 cases and 200 deaths; and Citrus has 4,218 cases and 158 deaths.
