Queer Asterisk is a nonprofit organization guided by queer and transgender leadership and rooted in community. The organization offers a diverse and affirming therapeutic environment, dedicated to the exploration and transformation of identity, relationships and emotional experience, within the context of a shifting society. Through outpatient counseling services, peer mentorship, community programs and educational training, Queer Asterisk works to improve the mental health and safety of Colorado LGBTQ+ youth, adults and families.
Embracing authentic expression, where individuals with dynamic and intersecting identities can thrive, its multicultural team of queer and transgender counselors is dedicated to creating an environment of openness, permission and acceptance. As mental health professionals informed by contemplative practice and social justice counseling, the organization finds that personal and collective healing occurs when we encourage ourselves and those around us to assume less, wonder more and experience transformation as a natural and essential aspect of being human.
Queer Asterisk recognizes that LGBTQ+ mental health is a systemic issue, requiring care and understanding at school, at home and in the workplace. As such, its team contracts with larger entities including hospitals, school districts and government agencies to provide continuing education for healthcare workers, teachers and social services providers. They also conduct counseling and support groups for parents, friends and family members, and provides clinical supervision for mental health providers from other agencies seeking to be more LGBTQ+ affirming.
Belonging is essential to mental health, and too rare for individuals with minority and/or marginalized identities. Queer Asterisk’s donation-based community programs include Teen Art Group, Queer Conversations, Queer Yoga, QTPOC Healing Circle and Queer Open Mic. The organization creates belonging by providing platforms for self-expression, meaningful social connection and active participation in personal and collective healing.
Since the onset of COVID-19, Queer Asterisk has seen a 500 percent increase in client inquiries and continues to meet the demand through 100 percent virtual services for counseling, trainings and community programming.
