Michigan reported 190 new coronavirus deaths Tuesday, Dec. 1, marking the largest increase since April and the third-largest increase throughout the pandemic.

The additional deaths included 30 that were late additions discovered during a regular vital records review of death certificates conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Still, Tuesday’s update pushed Michigan’s seven-day average to 91 deaths per day -- the highest moving average since May 4. The deaths were spread across 47 counties.

The health department also announced 5,793 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, which was fewer than the seven-day average of 6,534 new cases per day. However, part of the decline could be credited to Monday’s lower-than-average test count.

Labs across the state processed 35,155 tests Monday, with 14.7% coming back positive for coronavirus. It was the highest rate since April, though it was also the fewest tests processed in one day since Oct. 24.

Michigan has averaged more than 55,000 tests per day over the last week, with a positive rate of about 13.5%.

Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the state’s chief medical executive, noted slight declines in new cases across all regions over the last week when she spoke during a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Khaldun said she’s “cautiously optimistic” that residents started taking better precautions last month, but added that she’s very concerned that Thanksgiving gatherings are going to lead to further spikes in cases, deaths and hospitalizations in the coming weeks.

As of Tuesday, the state’s hospital systems were caring for 4,310 patients with confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19. It was a slight decline from Monday, though COVID-19 patients in the ICU increased from 851 to 873 over that time.

Since the start of the pandemic, the health department has tracked 366,242 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 9,324 residents who have died. The state has also reported 29,211 probable cases and 435 probable deaths linked to COVID-19 but not confirmed by a diagnostic test.

Of Michigan’s 83 counties, 80 reported new cases Tuesday, led by Wayne with 692, Macomb with 623 and Oakland with 527. Other counties with significant additions included Kent (487), Washtenaw (312), Ingham (199), Genesee (194), Ottawa (165), Saginaw (146), and Kalamazoo (134).

Forty-seven counties reported at least one new death Tuesday, including six counties with double-digit additions. Saginaw County added 17 deaths, followed by St. Clair with 16, Wayne with 15, Muskegon with 14, and Macomb and Genesee counties with 13 each.

Other top reporters for new deaths included Kent with nine; Ingham, Bay and Baraga with six each; Ionia and Oceana with five each; Ottawa, Monroe and Branch with four each; and Oakland, Kalamazoo, Livingston, Van Buren, Tuscola and Oscoda with three deaths each.

Below are online databases that allow readers to look up county-level data for the last month.

Cases by day it was reported to the state

First is a chart showing new cases reported to the state each day for the past month. This is based on when a confirmed coronavirus test is reported to the state, which means the patient first became sick days before.

You can call up a chart for any county, and you can put your cursor over a bar to see the date and number of cases. (Monday numbers cover both Monday and Sunday.)

(In a few instances, a county reported a negative number in daily new cases, following a retroactive reclassification by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. In those instances, we subtracted cases from the prior date and put 0 in the reported date.)

The next chart below shows new cases for the past month based on onset of symptoms. In this chart, numbers for the most recent days are incomplete because of the lag time between people getting sick and getting a confirmed coronavirus test result, which can take up to a week or more.
