Florida announced more than 17,000 coronavirus cases Saturday, a cumulation of two days worth of data because the state did not report numbers on Christmas Day.
Saturday’s addition of 17,042 cases brings the total number of statewide infections to 1,264,588 since March. The state also announced 142 additional deaths from the virus.
Statewide, 21,437 people have died from coronavirus. The weekly death average is about 107 people announced dead per day.
Vaccinations: As of Saturday, 113,946 people in Florida have been vaccinated against coronavirus, according to a Florida Department of Health report. It increased by 20,869 people since Thursday.
All of the vaccinations are the first dose and have primarily gone to people between the ages of 25 and 64.
In Tampa Bay, 23,295 people have received a vaccination. In Hillsborough, there have been 8,867 vaccinations, in Pinellas 8,832, in Polk 1,959, in Manatee 821, in Pasco 2,105, in Hernando 499 and in Citrus 212.
Miami-Dade and Broward County continue to lead the state in most vaccinations, followed by Orange County and then Hillsborough.
Hospitalizations: Statewide, about 5,500 people are in the hospital with a primary diagnosis of coronavirus, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. About 1,100 of those patients are in the Tampa Bay area.
Cases that led to a hospitalization increased by 196 admissions.
Statewide about 31 percent of hospital beds and 23 percent of ICU beds are available. In Tampa Bay, about 30 percent of hospital beds and about 24 percent of ICU beds are open.
Positivity: Florida’s average weekly positivity rate is about 9 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University. It is one of 47 states that doesn’t meet the World Health Organization recommendation for a 5 percent positivity rate or below.
When the positivity rate is too high, it can indicate there isn’t enough widespread testing in the community to capture mild and asymptomatic cases. When those cases go unidentified, they spread further. Testing across Florida remains high, with more than 110,000 tests processed each day in the past two weeks.
Local numbers: Tampa Bay added 3,393 coronavirus cases and 18 deaths Saturday.
Seven of the deaths were reported in Pinellas and one death was recorded in Hernando. Citrus, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco and Polk all recorded two deaths each.
Polk leads the area with the highest average weekly positivity rate at 11 percent, followed by Hillsborough and Pasco at 10 percent, Hernando at 9 percent, Citrus at 8 percent and Manatee and Pinellas at 7 percent.
As of the latest count, Hillsborough has 73,980 cases and 1,065 deaths; Pinellas has 42,973 cases and 1,027 deaths; Polk has 35,393 cases and 770 deaths; Manatee has 21,277 cases and 414 deaths; Pasco has 20,919 cases and 356 deaths; Hernando has 6,981 cases and 265 deaths; and Citrus has 6,359 cases and 252 deaths.
