A postgame ceremony kicked off the Ohio State celebration Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, where the Buckeyes came back for a 22-10 Big Ten Championship Game win over Northwestern. On the field, second-year head coach Ryan Day and Oklahoma graduate transfer running back Trey Sermon spoke briefly with FOX's Joel Klatt, putting a fourth straight conference title into perspective.
"I'll say this about this team right here — this is the most special group of men that I've ever been around in my life," said Day, who improved to 22-1 as Ohio State's head coach, which includes an interim stint for three games during the 2018 season. "The adversity that these young men have been through, what you families have been through, from the start of this thing, we can talk about it for an hour. This thing has been a journey along the way, and the one thing that this team has overcome is adversity. I kind of had a feeling it was going to go down like this today. I just knew it. It's just the way this season has gone. And then they rallied together at halftime, they come out and win in the second half, and we're Big Ten champs."
The No. 4 Buckeyes (6-0) returned from a 10-6 halftime deficit against the No. 14 Wildcats (6-2), doing so behind a historic performance from Sermon, who broke a Big Ten Championship Game and Ohio State record with 331 rushing yards. After a two-touchdown and 29-carry effort, Sermon earned the Big Ten Championship Game MVP as the recipient of the Grange-Griffin Trophy.
"I just want to thank my teammates and my coaches, man, just motivated me and just welcomed me into the brotherhood, man," Sermon said. "I'm just so appreciative, man, and glory to God."
"First, I do want to say congratulations to Northwestern for getting here, for a hard-fought game — what an incredible performance tonight and all year long — and to these Buckeyes," Klatt said. "In a year in which we didn't know if we would be standing here, folks, let's commend all these players for their hard work and dedication even to get to this point. And now, to hand out some hardware, the commissioner of the Big Ten, Kevin Warren."
"I would like to, first and foremost, congratulate Northwestern on a great season and a great game today," Warren said. "But we're really here to congratulate the Ohio State Buckeyes for their victory today in the Big Ten championship. And on behalf of the Big Ten Conference, we have incredible student-athletes, athletic directors, our coaches, our chancellors, our presidents, our families, to welcome you here today. And congratulations to (Ohio State) president (Kristina M.) Johnson, athletic director Gene Smith and, most of all, coach Day and the Ohio State players who are here today, who put on an incredible performance."
