Letter | Freedom of speech cannot be used to invite violence - Santa Cruz Sentinel

Your Editorial on Jan. 12 concerned fear that freedom of speech is in danger if we go forwarded removing Trump from access to publishing dangerous conspiracy lies and incitements to violence. I respectfully disagree with your concern that it is a “slippery slope” to deprive Trump of his megaphones and hard-core Trump extremists of their platforms. Freedom of speech is not absolute. It cannot be used to incite violence.

Using these platforms to spread lies had dangerous consequences. This president has already undermined the concept of truth, leaving too many of his gullible followers believing only him, not the responsible media. It is time to examine all media with an eye to those which are platforms for conspiracy theories and outright attacks on truth. This attack on facts, promoting “alternate facts,” has already resulted in an attempted coup. Freedom, and free speech, require responsible behavior.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes.
