Freedom Schools Movement is hosting a Juneteenth celebration June 19 dedicated to black Americans who have suffered from police brutality and systemic racism.
>> Panel: Police relation problems reflect larger issues
The event takes place at Richard Allen School, 184 Salem Ave., at noon and will include singing, cheers and chants in celebration of Juneteenth.
Juneteenth commemorates the Emancipation Proclamation being read to enslaved black Americans in Texas in 1865. Because Texas was the most remote state at the time, slaves didn’t learn of their freedom until six months after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
>> NEW EVENTS: More protests scheduled throughout region this week
All community members are invited to the family-friendly celebration and social distancing and masks will be required.
