Never underestimate the power of millions of Americans, fueled by the hope and belief in the promise of a better future.

We see it in the sleepless nights of our frontline health care workers caring for our sick, in the essential employees who risk their lives to keep us fed, in the teachers working to keep our kids from falling behind and in our neighbors banding together to help one another through these difficult times.

It’s because of the courage, kindness and service of people right here in Pinellas County, that our flag is still there.

That’s why the everyday heroism folks in our own backyard have demonstrated will set the stage for the beginning of the Biden-Harris administration.

Two days before Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are inaugurated as president and vice president — on the same day we honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of peaceful action to deliver change — we will honor the service of Americans by participating in a National Day of Service.

Dr. King preached, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.” We can do that by coming together — virtually and safely in person — to participate in everyday acts of service that will help our communities and this nation continue to persevere.

Here in Pinellas, folks can volunteer their time to help beautify and clean up our beaches and roadways, by giving their time to Feeding Tampa Bay’s food drive, or by volunteering with any of the many nonprofits in our area devoted to supporting our community.

Floridians are resilient. In the wake of hurricanes, we rebuild. In the wake of this pandemic, we will recover by leaning on one another. We’ve always kept the faith, no matter the obstacle.

In this next chapter of our nation’s history, we know there is no test too daunting, no tragedy too great that we can’t overcome when we come together. I hope you’ll join me in coming together to begin healing this nation with an act of service on January 18th.
