This Day in Braves History: January 14

1976 - Ted Turner completes his purchase of the Atlanta Braves for $12 million as a means of providing sports programming for his local channel 17.

2008 - The Braves acquire outfielder Mark Kotsay from the Oakland A’s in exchange for pitchers Joey Devine and Jamie Richmond. Kotsay appears in 88 games for the Braves hitting .289/.340/.418 before he is traded to the Red Sox for outfielder Luis Sumoza.

2010 - Adam LaRoche agrees to a one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. LaRoche made his Major League debut with the Braves in 2004 and was traded to the Pirates in exchange for Mike Gonzalez in 2007. Pittsburgh would deal LaRoche to the Red Sox on July 22, 2009 and Boston would then flip him to the Braves nine days later in exchange for first baseman Casey Kotchman. He would finish the season in Atlanta hitting .325/.401/.557 with 11 doubles and 12 homers over the final 57 games.

2015 - Atlanta trades catcher Evan Gattis and pitcher James Hoyt to the Houston Astros in exchange for pitchers Mike Foltynewicz and Andrew Thurman and infielder Rio Ruiz. Gattis would spend the next four seasons with the Astros and win a World Series in 2017. Foltynewicz was an All-Star in 2018 but was designated for assignment after just one start in 2020. He is currently a minor league free agent. Ruiz appeared in 72 games over three seasons with Atlanta but struggled to make his mark. He was claimed off waivers by the Orioles before the 2019 season and has appeared in 181 games over the last two seasons with Baltimore while hitting .229/.299/.393 with 21 home runs.
