GREENVILLE, S.C. – Laura Edmonds (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Cypress Bay) shot 77 on Friday to lead the FGCU women's golf team in the first round of the Lady Paladin Invitational hosted by Furman. Round two action from the Furman University Golf Course will start on Saturday morning at 9 AM.
Overall, the Eagles finished 13th as a team with a score of 315 on the day. Host Furman took the round one lead after shooting 280, while Coastal Carolina is second (292). The field features seven top-100 programs with North Florida (tied for 6th) leading the pack at No. 43 in the GolfStat.com rankings.
"We had quite a bit of nerves going today as this was our first round of the year and a couple folks making their collegiate debuts," said head coach Sarah Trew. "We definitely made some mistakes out there as a result of rustiness. We are looking forward to the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and put up a good round tomorrow. If we can eliminate some of the big numbers and avoid compounding mistakes, we should see a big improvement."
Edmonds led the FGCU five-some as she tied for 38th after going five-over par. Posie Farrelly (Lutz, Fla./George Steinbrenner HS), who made her collegiate debut, was just a stroke behind to tie for 52nd, while Josephine Bertelsen (Vejle, Denmark/Campus Vejle/Western Texas College) shot 79 to tie for 57th. Emma Grace Messenger (Montgomery, Texas/Legacy Prep Christian Academy) sits 66th after shooting 81 to round out the four counting scores for the day.
Farrelly and Edmonds each had strong starts to the day as the Eagles started on the back nine. Each tallied a pair of birdies with Farrelly hitting the turn at one over and Edmonds at two over. On the front side, Edmonds had bogeys on the first three holes before finishing the round strong with six straight pars.
Bertelsen led the Eagles with three birdies on the day. She sat at had a pair of doubles in her first nine, including on No. 18, but bounced back with birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 after the turn.
Despite having the non-counting score on the day, Haley Yerxa (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) posted a pair of birdies and finished four over on her final nine holes.
Following the Lady Paladin Invitational, the Eagles will return to action on Monday and Tuesday, October 4-5, at the Jupiter Women's Invitational hosted by FAU in Jupiter, Fla.
