Rakes Climbs in to Top 10 on Final Day at Wildcat Invitational

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Longwood sophomore Nick Rakes broke even in his final round and cracked the top 10 at the Wildcat Fall Invitational to headline the Lancers' two-day performance at Radnor Valley Country Club Tuesday afternoon.
Rakes' climb up the leaderboard saw him lower his score on the par-70, 6,571-yard course for a second straight round, trimming his first-round five-over 75 to an even 70 in Monday's final turn. That performance moved him up five spots in the standings and earned him a three-round score of 75-71-70—216 (+6) to come in as Longwood's top finisher for the second time in three tournaments this fall.
Behind Rakes was freshman Scott Jordan, who followed his even second round with a three-over 73 Tuesday to card a 75-70-73—218 (+8) and a 14th-place finish. He was one of three Lancers to place among the 45-player field's top 20, joining senior Payo Larrain who shot a 75-71-76—222 (+12) to finish tied for 18th.
Those three top-20 individual performances came despite an hour-long weather delay early in the day and helped propel Longwood to a sixth-place finish, trailing fifth-place Villanova by one stroke and fourth-place Georgetown by six strokes. The Lancers' plus-13 in the final round followed a Monday comeback in which they rallied from a first-round 300 to shave 16 strokes off their score in round two, ultimately finishing at 300-284-293—877 (+37).
"It probably goes without saying that today's round didn't go as we had envisioned," Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman said. "We made a few early bogeys, but had we been able to stay a little more patient, there were still plenty of opportunities to get those shots back. I thought the rain and lightning delay came at the perfect time for us to be able to regroup and allow us the chance to start fresh once play began again, but unfortunately, the birdies never really came after the delay either."
Lancer junior Christian Michael also enjoyed a strong third round, shooting a four-over 74 to finish 80-72-74—226 (+16), while senior Brendan Dunphy – who was the runner up at the Joe Feaganes Invitational on Sept. 17 – tied Michael for 30th place with a 75-73-78—226 (+16).
"Obviously, a couple big numbers late hurt badly as well," Fillman added. "Nick was the one guy who found a way to post a good score. He may not have had his best game, but he scraped and clawed his way around to put up a score we needed. We talk about having the mentality to do that every day, so it's always good for everybody to see one of us do it when it counts. I also thought it was good for Scott to be out there last for us today. That'll prove to be a big benefit for him down the road."
The Wildcat Invitational is the third of five multi-day tournaments for the Lancers this fall, with the next two coming at the Elon Invitational on Oct. 11-12 in Burlington, N.C., and the OBX Collegiate on Oct. 24-25 in Powells Point, N.C. Before that, however, the team will compete in the Radford Highlander Invitational, a one-day outing hosted by Big South rival Radford this Monday, Oct. 4, at the River Course at Virginia Tech.
