Given the holiday weekend and all for week one, we skipped our usual beer selections. But now in week two, there are no such distractions! So we’re back in action telling you the best craft beer selections for Saturday’s Syracuse Orange vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights football game.
Whether you’re drinking before, during or after this game, we’ve provided some local and not-so-local beer recommendations below. Fair warning in advance: You won’t be able to acquire at least one of these.
Syracuse Area Beer Pick: Prison City Sad Devotion to Ancient Religions
Coming out the gates hot. We’ve got a week one with Prison City in Auburn. This schwarzbier hits all the buttons. Smooth, clean, malty flavors. A malty offering that isn’t a stout. While their Riot series is the cat’s pajamas, Prison City’s alternate styles are a the top of their game. You throw in a Star Wars reference, and you had me hooked. Anything I’ve had from them has been a winner.
Rutgers Area Beer Pick: Cypress Insane
We’d note that Rutgers fans have probably needed quite a few hazy DIPAs to get through Saturdays in recent years, though we’re not necessarily ones to talk there of late. Still, Insane is the hazy DIPA of choice from Cypress, located in nearby Edison, N.J. It’s double-dry hopped and loaded with only citra hops — something that’s almost become a foreign concept at this point given the extensive bills that typically come with most IPAs today. In this case, the result is an aromatic trip with an juicy and dry finish that conjures every tropical note you’d expect.
Los Angeles Area Beer Pick: Beachwood 13
Given how hot it’s been in L.A. this week, I certainly could’ve used this beer, but alas, it was released back in January. Still, it was one of my favorites of the year, so I wanted to highlight it. Beachwood’s known for its West Coast IPAs, while pilsners have become a staple of the local beer scene here. “13” is Beachwood’s take on German pilsners, combining Czech Saaz and mosaic hops to create an incredibly refreshing and tropical selection with some heavy melon aromas. It’s delicious, IPA-type flavor in a convenient, 5% ABV package, and the type of beverage I’d love to see make it into the brewery’s year-round roster (seems unlikely, but I can dream).
