CARROLLTON, Texas – After finishing Monday's first round in sixth overall, the FGCU men's golf team slipped into a tie for 11th following Tuesday's second round at the Maridoe Collegiate Invitational. The Eagles carded a team score of 308 after shooting 297 on Monday.

Arizona State moved to the top of the leaderboard of the highly-competitive 15-team field after shooting 282 on Tuesday for a two-day score of 576. Texas sits in second (578), while Oklahoma (580) dropped to third. The Eagles are tied with host North Texas with a 36-hole score of 605. Fellow ASUN member Liberty sits fourth with a score of 587.

"I'm proud of our guys as they did a good job and stayed patient today," said head coach Andrew Danna. "They are working hard despite some mistakes made today. We look forward to another opportunity to get better tomorrow."

Brady Madsen (Raymond, Minn./MacCray HS/Winona State) led the Eagles in the second round after shooting 75 cutting three strokes off his Monday performance. He sits tied for 47th with Austin Cherichella (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona HS) who shot 77 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 153.

Jon Hopkins (Bishop's Stortford, England/Mississippi Gulf Coast CC) matched his first round score of 76, while Pierre Viallaneix (Apopka, Fla./Winter Park HS/Western Carolina) carded an 80 on Tuesday. After sitting tied for second with a two-under par 70, Frankie Capan III (North Oaks, Minn./Northwest Christian HS/Alabama) fell into a tie for 36th shooting 81 in the second round.

After shooting three over on the front nine, Madsen finished the back side even after picking up a bogey on No. 11 before then carding a birdie on No. 14.

Hopkins bounced back from a triple on No. 10 to pick up a pair of birdies on the next three holes. He finished a par on four of the next five to match his Monday score of 76.

Cherichella and Capan each had good starts on the day going two-over and even, respectively, on the front nine, but struggled on the back side. Viallaneix also played well on the front to hit the turn at two over, but saw the same struggles on the back as Cherichella and Capan.

The Eagles will close out the Maridoe Collegiate on Wednesday with Viallaneix teeing off at 9 AM followed by Madsen, Cherichella, Hopkins, and Capan. Golf Channel television coverage will begin at 4 PM ET for the final round action.

HEAD COACH ANDREW DANNA:
Danna just finished his second year at the helm of the FGCU men's golf program leading the Eagles to a second place finish at the ASUN Championship. One of the best turnarounds in NCAA history saw the Green and Blue, led by Van Holmgren who became the first player to earn PING All-Region honors, jump from No. 257 in the final 2019-20 GolfStat.com rankings to a program-best 65 to close out 2020-21. Before taking over in Fort Myers, he served the 2018-19 season as the assistant at LSU. Prior to that he was the ultra-successful head coach for six years at Lynn University where he led them to the 2018 NCAA Division II national championship and was, subsequently, chosen the David Williams National Coach of the Year. He also led the Fighting Knights to three national runner-up placements, with a third and eighth place finish in his other two seasons.
