Erie, PA. – The Wheeling University Women's Golf team began play at the Michael Corbett Classic on Sunday at Gannon University. The Cardinals finished the first day in fifth place with a score of 346, exactly one stroke behind fellow Mountain East Conference (MEC) opponent the University of Charleston.
Senior Olivia Zampedro (Mentor, OH./Lake HS) led the way for the Cardinals on the day shooting an 83 through the first round of play. After having her best tournament of the season at The University of Charleston last week, Zampedro continued that success at the Michael Corbett Classic. She finished the day tied for 15th in the field and was one of two Wheeling golfers to finish in the top 20 of the event after day one.
The other top 20 finisher was junior Emily Holzopfel (Rayland, OH./Buckeye Local), who finished day one with an 85. The reigning MEC Women's Golfer of the week posted her highest single-round score of the season but continues to keep her scores at or below 85 in all five rounds that she has played this season. She is tied for 18th in the field after day one and is hoping to continue to climb the leaderboard on day two Monday.
Junior Zoila Herrera (Miami, FL./Coral Gables) and freshman Nicole Lincicome were next on the list, with both women shooting an 89 on day one, and tying for 27th on the leaderboard. Junior Kylee Tolliver (Reedsville, OH./Eastern) rounded out the day one leaderboard, scoring a 93 during her first-round action.
The Wheeling Women's Golf team continues the Michael Corbett Classic tomorrow morning at Whispering Winds Golf Course.
