Redbirds Stand 10th After Opening Day of Ram Masters Invitational - Illinois State University Athletics - Illinois State Athletics

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – In an opening day that saw strong winds and chilly conditions early, the Illinois State men's golf team shot nearly-even rounds, and heads into the final round just a dozen strokes from the team lead in the tournament.

Through the first 36 holes of the tournament the Redbirds carded a team score of 634 Northern Colorado leads the way with a 622, with Pacific (623), Colorado State (624), Grand Canyon (624), Wyoming (625), Wichita State (625), Sacramento State (628), Creighton (628), and Utah Valley (629) finished just ahead of ISU. South Dakota (639), CSU-Fullerton (645), UC San Diego (647), Northern Iowa (653), Air Force (654), and Utah State (662) finished behind the Redbirds.

Redbird senior Andrew O'Brien and transfer Valentin Peugnet shared the team lead after the first day with matching 156's, which is tied for 18th in the field. Joe Hodgson is tied for 31st with a two-round 159, while Parker Wisdom (164) and Alex McCulla (165) rounded out the team's fourth and fifth golfers in the field.

Peugnet's round started on the course's seventh hole in the shotgun-start event and started with a trio of pars. After four over-par holes, pushed him to five strokes over par, he hit a hot streak with three birdies over a five-hole stretch to drop his score to two strokes over par. He closed with another stretch of five holes that were five strokes over par, closing his round with a seven-over 77. In the evening round, he had a birdie to go with 11 pars, closing his second round with a nine-over 79.

O'Brien started his day with a birdie on the par-three fifth hole, he came back with two pars and a bogey of his next three holes to stay at even par. Seven pars over the last 14 holes of the round saw him close at eight strokes over par for the first round. He added another birdie on his second round along with eight pars, giving him an eight-over 78.

Hodgson had a birdie on the round – on the par-five 15th hole – with seven pars paving the way for his 80. Hodgson tied for the team lead with birdies in the second round, as he had birdies on back-to-back holes on his 10th and 11th holes of the final round. He also added seven pars en route to his nine-over 79.

Wisdom opened his day with two birdies – second-most on the team – with six pars and 10 holes over par for his 11-over 80. He added another two birdies on the second round, while adding six pars, carding an 83 for the round.

McCulla – opening on the fifth hole, had 11 pars on the opening 18 holes, with seven holes over par for his opening-round 10-over par 80. His second round had a strong share of ups and downs, with a birdie and five pars, to go with a dozen scores over par, closing his round with an 85.

The Redbirds return to the course for the third and final round starting at 9 a.m. CT.
