Week 1 – Washington 44 – Montana 20

The Dawgs welcome fans back into Husky Stadium with a reasonably comfortable win. The Grizz score a few more points than would be ideal, but keep in mind that this is the #9 ranked team in FBS and returns arguably the top receiver in the Big Sky in Samuel Akem. Husky fans will enjoy being at a football game at long last, and a clinical, efficient performance by Dylan Morris and the Cam Davis/Richard Newton duo makes everyone forget that Montana moved the ball reasonably well.

Week 2 – Washington 34 – Michigan 28

Jimmy Lake gets his signature win over a blue blood opponent, even if this vintage of Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines pales in comparison to the Alabama and Ohio State teams that knocked off UW in recent years. The game comes down to Morris extending drives through the second half with poise and confidence just enough to outweigh Cade McNamara on the opposite sideline. Cade Otton takes home player of the game honors with two TD catches, including one in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Week 3 –Washington 45 – Arkansas State 17

The Red Wolves’ defense struggled mightily in 2020, giving up at least 45 points to the likes of Texas State, Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, and Georgia State. The Huskies have a deadlier attack than those foes and will run the ball with little resistance, resulting in both Davis and Sean McGrew totaling over 100 yards of total offense. The defense will look better, in part because the offense will be on the field so much that its job will be easier.

Week 4 - Washington 27 – California 20

UW’s humming offense finally comes up against a worthy adversary in Justin Wilcox. The Dawgs still have enough firepower to overcome a depleted Cal secondary with another strong game from Otton. Eddie Ulofoshio is all over defensively, piling up 15 tackles on Christopher Brown and Chase Garbers. The win helps erase the bad memories of the 2019 thunderstorms.

Week 5 – Washington 33 – Oregon State 21

Jonathan Smith’s Beavers once again show the scheme and effort to stay in a game against the Dawgs, but Washington’s talent advantage wins out in the end. With Colorado transfer Sam Noyer and no Jemar Jefferson leading the offense, big plays are hard to come by for the Beavers. Oregon State’s lack of bulk up front gives Morris plenty of time in the pocket and he takes advantage with more deep completions than we have seen so far. At 5-0 and atop the Pac-12, UW starts getting some national attention heading into the bye week.

Week 7 – Washington 38 – UCLA 35

Chip Kelly gives Lake and the Dawgs all they wanted and more. Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Zach Charbonnet prove to be the most productive offensive duo Washington has faced so far. Luckily, UCLA’s defense can’t keep up with its offense and the Husky running game wears them down as the game goes on. Cam Davis is crucial to a fourth quarter comeback and Peyton Henry punches in the field goal that clinches the game with under two minutes to go.

Week 8 – Washington 27 – Arizona 13

It’s a Friday night game and it’s in the desert. Those variables could spell trouble for the Huskies. Fortunately, Arizona is not much of a challenge in 2021 and UW rides a no-nonsense game plan to a comfortable victory. Bralen Trice and Cooper McDonald live in the backfield and completely shut down the Wildcat passing attack. Even without the offensive fireworks from the 2020 game, the Dawgs are happy to have the road win in the bank.

Week 9 – Stanford 24 – Washington 17

There’s no magic to the Huskies’ struggles with Stanford. The Dawgs have developed a defensive system to handle most top opponents who like to spread the field. Stanford is the exception to the strategic rule. Tanner McKee’s big arm will put pressure on either UW’s nickel or ILB covering TEs or slot receivers. On a slow track away from home, the Dawgs will finally have an offensive off game. Even in a relative down year for the Cardinal, it will remain a maddening blind spot for UW.

Week 10 – Oregon 35 – Washington 30

Everyone has this game circled on the calendar going into the year. Between the Oregon and Michigan games, the Dawgs have two high-profile opportunities that would help Jimmy Lake define the early part of his UW coaching tenure. I’m just not enough of an optimist to expect UW to win both games. Washington’s defense is still very good, but Oregon can spread the talented DBs wide with speedy outside weapons and pound the middle with Travis Dye and CJ Verdell.

Week 11 – Washington 34 – Arizona State 27

The Huskies break out of a miniature losing streak with a win over a strong Arizona State team. Jayden Daniels has the wheels to put constant pressure on UW’s defensive front and he will extend enough drives to make us pull out a few hairs. On the other hand, Arizona State’s defense has just as much trouble getting the Dawgs off the field. Morris shows the steely resolve and decision-making strengths that distinguish him as a star. The game flies by with long drives, but some untimely penalties sidetrack ASU enough for the Huskies to pull it out.

Week 12 – Washington 37 – Colorado 18

The Buffaloes were a pleasant surprise in Karl Dorrell’s first season. On second look, there’s a bit less optimism for this year and the future. Sam Noyer is in Corvallis and Jarek McKinnon is the NFL. Plus, Colorado’s wins were much narrower than their losses in 2020. When Colorado shocked UW in 2019, it revolved around a poor performance by the Huskies’ offensive line. That won’t be the case this year and UW will have a strong, balanced offensive game.

Week 13- Washington 30 – Washington State 23

The Cougars will put up a fight in Nick Rolovich’s first shot at an Apple Cup victory. UW will regret some missed opportunities against a leaky Wazzu defense. Still, for the same reason that UW’s faster, leaner defense couldn’t handle Stanford’s bludgeoning game, the Cougars won’t be able to exploit the seams of the defense.

Final record – Washington 10-2 (7-2), 1^st in Pac-12 North
