DURHAM – A record-setting performance by freshman Shayeann Day-Wilson along with junior Celeste Taylor's fifth career double-double led the Duke women's basketball team (6-0) to a 91-75 win over the Troy Trojans on Sunday afternoon at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Day-Wilson poured in a career-high 26 points (9-of-14) to go with five rebounds and four assists in 32 minutes off the bench. The rookie shot at an 80-percent clip (8-of-10) from distance and tied the Duke school record for most threes made in a single game. Taylor wasn't too far behind Day-Wilson, as the Valley Stream, N.Y., native scored 24 points, pulled down 11 boards and dished out a team best six assists.
Senior Elizabeth Balogun and graduate student Lexi Gordon also finished the game in double figures, with Balogun totaling 11 points and nine rebounds and Gordon adding 10 points and three rebounds. Graduate student Jade Williams paced the Blue Devils on the glass and finished the game with a season-high 13 boards, while also chipping in nine points of her own.
Troy opened with seven of the game's first 10 points, but Duke battled back to tie game at 9-9. Jasmine Robinson's split trip at the free throw line put the visitors back in front by one, then Day-Wilson cashed in back-to-back trifectas to give Duke a five point lead at the first media timeout. Balogun's fastbreak triple, followed by a pull up from Day-Wilson, extended the advantage to eight, 20-12. Duke held Troy to just three makes through its final 14 shots from the floor and ended the quarter with a 22-16 advantage.
The Blue Devils continued to push the pace and build upon their lead in the second. Six consecutive points by Williams gave Duke a double-digit advantage, then Taylor scored five of the team's next seven points to put the Blue Devils ahead by 14, 38-24. The Trojans issued a response and used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to six. However, the Blue Devils closed out the half strong and took an 11-point lead into the break following Amaya Finklea-Guity's layup and Taylor's mid-range jumper as time expired.
Four players combined for the team's 25 second quarter points, led by Williams' eight. Taylor poured in seven of her nine first-half points, Day Wilson added six more points to her total to give her a team-high 14, while Finklea-Guity scored four of her six first-half points in the quarter. Williams and Taylor led Duke with five boards in the half, while Day-Wilson had four dimes to pace the team.
The teams traded baskets to start the third period before Jasmine Robinson's layup and Tiyah Johnson's three pulled Troy within single digits, 53-45, forcing a Duke timeout. A pair of free throws brought the Trojans within six, but Taylor responded with a triple from the right corner to halt the visitors' 7-0 run. Troy attempted to chip away at the lead over the remainder of the third stanza, however, each time, Duke had an answer. Taylor (10) and Day-Wilson (6) continued to fill up the stat sheet for Duke, as the duo knocked down a pair of triples each, while also getting layups from freshman Lee Volker as well as Taylor, to end the third with a 70-59 Blue Devil lead.
Duke put the game away in the fourth and outscored the Trojans 21-16 over the final 10 minutes to secure the 16-point victory.
Felmas Koranga led Troy (3-3) with 24 points and 16 rebounds.
