Northwood University Gears Up for Go MAD Day This Friday - Northwood University

This Friday is one of the most anticipated days of the year for many Northwood University students, staff, and faculty. It’s Go MAD Day. Every year on Go MAD Day, which stands for “Go Make A Difference Day,” Northwood University generously engages as many student, staff and faculty volunteers as possible in a single day. Hundreds of individuals and dozens of community organizations are beneficiaries of their hard work. Projects range from raking yards to delivering care packages to those affected by last year’s flooding and many more.

The Go MAD theme was inspired by the late Pat Riepma, Northwood University’s football coach and athletic director. Riepma was known for encouraging his players and others to “Go MAD” – to go make a difference. That sense of responsibility to help others is part of his legacy for his family, friends, players, and the Northwood and Midland communities after his death from cancer in 2015.

“Go MAD Day is one of the outstanding days of the year at Northwood as the entire student body, faculty, and staff come together to make a difference in our community,” said Andy Cripe Dean of Student Affairs. “It has now become a tradition, whether we had the privilege of knowing and working with coach Riepma or not. But Go MAD is not just about one day. I encourage our students and others to challenge themselves to make a difference every day. Pat Riepma left an incredible legacy, and I am grateful for the way the Northwood family continues to honor him through their service to the community and beyond.”

With its roots in Northwood sports, it’s not surprising many athletes get involved. In all, most of our students, including representatives from every sports team, along with faculty and staff, are participating in this year’s activities supporting individuals and organizations throughout Midland County. That represents more than 1,500 hours of community service in one day.

“Giving back is a key part of The Northwood Idea—our philosophy of ethical and successful leadership—that teaches students how to be selfless and ensures success for future generations,” said Northwood President Kent MacDonald. “Through the support and commitment to volunteerism from students, staff, and faculty, we can effectively serve the community, and we are proud to be Midland’s University.”
