The Cubs released their Opening Day roster on Thursday ahead of Friday's first game against the Milwaukee Brewers

MLB clubs are allotted 30 active roster spots for the first two weeks of the season. That number drops to 28 in Weeks 3-4 and then 26 in Weeks 5-6. Each club will carry a three-man taxi squad on road trips to have players available if need arises. One of those players must be a catcher.

José Quintana will start the year on the 10-day injured list as he recovers from thumb surgery. Utility man Daniel Descalso was placed on the 45-day IL after spraining his left ankle in Wednesday's exhibition game.

The Cubs optioned pitchers Ryan Tepera and Jharel Cotton to their South Bend training site and assigned pitcher Colin Rea, who was optioned to Triple-A in March, to the South Bend roster. They also assigned four non-roster players to South Bend: utility man Hernán Pérez, outfielder Ian Miller, catcher P.J. Higgins and pitcher Danny Hultzen.

Infielder/outfielder Robel Garcia has been designated for assignment. Outfielder Mark Zagunis opted not to play this season and was placed on the restricted list. The 40-man roster stands at 40 and the 60-man player pool stands at 53.

Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is expected to be in Friday's Opening Day lineup against the Brewers.

Bryant was a late scratch from Wednesday's exhibition game against the Twins due to back tightness. Cubs manager David Ross said he was being cautious and if it was a regular season game, Bryant would have played.

Bryant took ground balls at third base on Thursday and all signs point to him being in Friday's lineup, hitting leadoff.

"He feels pretty good today," Ross said Thursday. "He hasn't mentioned anything other than he's ready to go."

As bad as David Ross might want to win the World Series this year, the first-year Cubs manager doesn't want to expand the playoff field to help make it happen.

"I’m probably a little bit against expanding it. Let’s make it mean something," Ross said Thursday when asked about reports of MLB and the union discussing an expanded playoff field. "Let’s go. Let’s get after it from Day 1. I think everyone’s into this sprint mentality. I’m into it and every game matters. Let’s not water anything down. Let’s get after it from Day 1."

MLB's plan for adding six teams to the postseason, which was first proposed during negotiations on startup plans for the 60-game season, would replace the two wild-card games with four first-round series in each league, followed by the usual format after that.

"I understand maybe what’s best for baseball in a 60 game season is putting more teams in the postseason and see how that plays out," Ross sasid. "But I’m a believer of baseball’s a game about overcoming adversity. And this is as big of an adversity as you can put yourself in. And the team that did the best job in the downtime of being prepared and staying ready to should be rewarded, whether that’s the big market teams or maybe a team that wasn’t even on the radar to make the playoffs. If they play well in these two months they deserve to get in and fight for a championship."

The Cubs have not reported a positive COVID-19 test among its players since intake testing began. And key players such as Kyle Hendricks and Willson Contreras showed up after the three-month shutdown in advanced competitive shape.
