With mask and vaccine restrictions expiring nationwide and angry truckers clogging D.C. area traffic, the question remains, what exactly is the “Freedom Convoy” protesting?
The mandates are expiring, why are you still making strangers’ lives miserable? It’s almost as if this whole thing was never really about the mandates, but was in fact, a performative right-wing tantrum designed to attract maximum attention with minimum thought. It’s almost as if the folks participating in these pointless acts of civil annoyance have so much of their identity wrapped up in the endorphin-pumping nature of grievance politics they can’t stop. I saw one of these protests a few weeks ago where more reporters than truckers showed up, and that outsized attention for what is a rather meager act of civil disobedience may be part of the allure. Tucker Carlson isn’t going to feature you three nights a week for hauling sheet metal, but dust off your collection of miniature rig-mounted American flags and the cameras start rolling.
I’m sure there’s a community aspect to all of this, as well. It’s fun getting to share the highway with colleagues who previously only existed as avatars on angry Facebook groups dedicated to overturning Arby’s socialist no pants, no service rule. Being perpetually furious is their hobby and it’s fun to meet up with like-minded people.
