Last weekend my college friend, Andrew, asked if I wanted to go fishing if he passed through town on his way home to Mount Desert Island. So we grabbed our fishing poles and went down to Freedom Pond.
He had never been to this part of the state — the best he had done was pass through Palermo and Liberty while traveling on Route 3 — and was excited to see the place his friend couldn’t stop talking about in college. We canoed all around the pond in barely 45 degree weather, the sun hiding behind the clouds more often than not. We never got so much as a nibble, but after all — is the point of fishing really to catch a fish?
The Charter Commission has met a couple of times now. I think we have made nice headway on organizing a Freedom charter. We meet on the first and third Tuesdays of the month, at the Freedom Town Hall from 6 p.m. to no later than 8. We have researched other municipal charters and find much inspiration in other towns of similar size and government structure.
Remember that spring cleaning (or “Brown Goods Week,” a colloquial phrase for which my city-faring friends never fail to poke fun at me — what exactly is a “brown good?”) starts Monday, May 16. The town sent out a mass mailer with pertinent information, including what can and cannot be picked up. Like last year, pickup will take place over the course of a week. If you have any questions about spring cleaning, please call the Town Office.
