EASTON — The Mifflin County girls basketball team was rolling early but was unable to keep its pace as the Huskies fell to Freedom, 57-50, in the third-place game of the Easton Rotary Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

The Huskies led 15-4 after one, but a poor third quarter ended up costing Mifflin County down the stretch as Freedom scored 21 points in the second and the momentum carried over into the third quarter, as Freedom drilled a pair of threes in the third to get moving offensively.

“I thought that we came out and were very aggressive early at both ends of the court, however in the second quarter, we had some breakdowns in defensive rotation and gave their shooters open looks, which gave them some confidence and the momentum started to change,” Huskies coach Aaron Gingrich said. “In the third quarter, they switched to man and we got any shot that we wanted, but just didn’t convert on open looks.”

Freedom caught fire as Keturah Stewart and Kailey Turpening scored 19 and 16 points, respectively, as the Huskies were outscored 32-16 in the second half.

Marissa Gingrich had a double-double with 25 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, while Bri Bodtorf had eight points, 10 boards and five assists. Knable had five steals.

Overall, Mifflin County sits at 3-4, with three of its four losses to undefeated teams.

“We knew going into the season that we had three or four really good games before the start of the year, but the girls acknowledge that all of their season goals are still ahead of them and they are positive and confident going into the new year,” Gingrich said. “Easton was a good experience, but we are looking forward to trying to arrange our own holiday tournament with the boys next season.”

Mifflin County returns to action when it hosts Hershey on Tuesday.
