An associate for Rudy Giuliani wrote a letter asking former President Donald Trump that his former personal attorney receive payment, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a “general pardon” after the January 6 Capitol attack, The New York Times reported on Sunday.

According to a new book, “Giuliani: The Rise and Tragic Fall of America’s Mayor,” by journalist Andrew Kirtzman, Giuliani’s associate, Maria Ryan wrote: “As you know, he lost his job and income and more defending you during the Russia hoax investigation and then the impeachment pro bono.” Ryan requested $2.5 million for Giuliani’s legal services and expenses and $45,000 for her own services, “working in the campaign pursuing truth and justice for the president,” according to the book.

The letter continued, asking for a Presidential Medal of Freedom: “Mr. Giuliani rarely asks for anything for himself. He is praying you present him with this on Friday, January 15 or Monday the 19.”

The last request was for the former president to grant Giuliani a “general pardon.” The letter was dated Jan. 10, 2021—four days after the Capitol riot.

Bernard B. Kerik, an adviser to Giuliani and a police commissioner during Giuliani’s tenure as New York City mayor, intercepted the letter before it reached the hands of Trump.

A lawyer for Giuliani said his client was not aware of the messages, didn’t authorize them being sent, and “that he never asked for a pardon and told President Trump that if he was offered a pardon, he would decline it because he didn’t do anything wrong.”

After proliferating 2020 election lies, Giuliani was barred from practicing law in New York. Prosecutors in the Georgia election investigation informed Giuliani last week that he was a target in the probe, and spent six hours behind closed doors on Wednesday answering the grand jury’s questions about Trump's election interference following his defeat to President Joe Biden.

Giuliani is also being sued by voting-machine companies Dominion and Smartmatic for defamation, which could potentially cost him billions.
