Parkland 21, Freedom 13 – Rapid Recap
Parkland High School’s football team got the spark it needed to start the second half and then flexed the muscle required to finish the job.
The Trojans, ranked No. 4 by lehighvalleylive.com, topped No. 3 Freedom 21-13 on Friday night in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South Division clash at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium.
Turning point: Parkland scored on the second half’s first play from scrimmage. Wideout Nakhi Bullock caught a screen pass and sprinted 71 yards down the away sideline to give the Trojans the lead. The extra point put Parkland ahead 14-7 16 seconds into the third quarter.
Freedom went three-and-out on its next series and the Trojans regained possession at their own 32-yard line.
Parkland, which was without starting tailback Trey Tremba (who didn’t play in the second half), used 18 plays to register five first downs and drain 10 minutes and 56 seconds off the clock. Quarterback Luke Spang capped the march with a 5-yard TD run, putting his team ahead 21-7 with 11:55 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Trojans used a 14-play, 7-minute and 33-second drive to seal the victory.
Offensive opening: Freedom and Parkland each scored on their opening possessions, going 80 and 75 yards, respectively.
Patriots quarterback Ethan Neidig capped the Patriots’ 5-minute, 45-second series with a 2-yard touchdown run to put the hosts ahead.
The Trojans took 5:19 and used 12 plays to score. Tremba racked up 54 rushing yards on the drive, including a powerful 21-yard TD on fourth-and-2.
The 7-7 score held to halftime.
Top performers: Spang completed 12 of 15 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 36 yards and a score. Marquez Wimberley rushed 18 times for 58 yards.
Bullock finished with three receptions for 79 yards. Jack Harrison made four catches for 44 yards, including a ridiculous 22-yard grab to convert an important third down on Parkland’s final possession.
Trojans two-way lineman Nate Kemmerer had a pair of important tackles for loss, one of which was a sack.
Freedom running back Jalen Fletcher had 11 carries for 68 yards and a TD. Noah Pierre added 61 yards on four carries.
Neidig completed seven passes for 85 yards and rushed 13 times for 61 yards and a TD.
What it means: Parkland rebounded from its defeat to Nazareth in fine fashion. The Trojans (2-1 overall, 2-1 division) meet Allentown Central Catholic next.
Freedom fell to 1-2 this season and hosts the unbeaten Blue Eagles on Sept. 17.
