Freedom Murphy has been the communications director for the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) since March, but he’s no stranger to the workings of Capitol Hill.
A Howard University graduate, Murphy began his political time interning for former President Obama’s communications office in 2015. For the 2022 midterm cycle, he campaigned for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. But he knew if he ever had the opportunity, he would work with the CBC.
Born in Georgia’s 5th Congressional District — the district of the late Rep. John Lewis — Murphy’s interest in politics piqued during his time at Howard University.
“I was surrounded every day by really talented and bright people that really wanted to go and change the world,” said Murphy, 30.
As CBC’s communications director, Murphy fields calls and emails from the press and though much of his time is spent connecting reporters with Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Nev.), chair of the caucus, Murphy’s status essentially links him to the office of all 58 members of the “conscience of the congress.”
He’s also well-versed in what policies the CBC is working to move through Congress, including voting rights protections and preserving education standards.
Murphy said that working for the CBC has been an “honor” that he doesn’t take for granted.
“For more than 50 years, the CBC has touted some of the leaders in Congress that have been at the forefront of a lot of amazing change. I think a really cool part of this job is being able to be a part of that history, which I think is a privilege,” Murphy said.
Murphy urged any soon-to-be graduates to follow their passions.
“If it’s your passion, if it’s something that you’re driven to do or something that you feel is a calling for you just go for it. Don’t ever take no for an answer,” Murphy said.
