While slightly subdued, there were squeals in Tuscaloosa for the University of Alabama’s annual sorority Bid Day.
Due to ongoing COVID-19 health and safety concerns, the UA announced that its fall sorority recruitment would be held virtually. No parents, family or guests would be allowed to attend Bid Day activities.
In July, the Alabama Panhellenic Association announced bids would be distributed via email to new members at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, and would include additional information about an opportunity for the new members to come to the chapter house at a specific time later in afternoon, as well as information about available accommodations for those who do not wish to visit the chapter house in person.
On Sunday, there were was an in-person Bid Day event, with participating sororities using a staggered approach where new pledge classes gathered at Tutwiler Hall and left one group at a time to visit their new houses, where active members and ZAP photographers awaited them.
The scene was not the spectacle the event typically draws, in which scores of family and friends and other onlookers create a gameday-like atmosphere on Magnolia, Colonial and Bryant Drives, in the shadows of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The crowds line up behind barricades to watch the annual “running of the bids,” during which each sororities new pledge class gathers in a stadium gate and sprints (and screams) together until they reach their new home away from home.
The strolls from Tutwiler elicited sporadic squeals and yelps, as pledges (required to wear masks) sauntered through as much shade as they could find until they hit the houses for meetings that more resembled the traditional approach.
UA did not release the 2020 pledge class numbers as of Sunday evening, though an official said they would share them when they became available. UA typically has more than 2,200 women participate in recruitment along with more than 4,000 active sorority members. The APA page said in July that registration numbers “are looking similar to past years.”
In 2019, more than 2,000 women received bids during the culmination of the University of Alabama’s sorority recruitment week, with the annual Bid Day drawing another large crowd on a scorching-hot Sunday at the Capstone. Of the 2,239 women who attended the first round of events for Fall 2019 formal recruitment at UA, 90 percent (2,007 women) received bids from the 17 Panhellenic sororities.
