When the Big 12 voted to play football this fall, Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer said it was time to "take a deep breath and get ready for the first game."
On the flip side, while he's excited about the upcoming season, offensive coordinator Larry Fedora says there's not enough time in the day.
"There's never enough time for me," said Fedora, a former head coach at Southern Mississippi and North Carolina. "I don't care if I have an experienced group, I always want more time. I want 27 hours during the day instead of 24."
Fedora said the key for the Bears, who will tentatively open the season Sept. 12 with a home game against a non-conference opponent, is to figure out who they are and what they can do.
"We tell them, if we can just get a little bit better each day, if each guy gets this much better, we're going to be fine," Fedora said. "Our job as coaches is to determine once we get to that point, what can we do? How do we put our guys in the best position for them to be successful? What is our identity? Who are we? We're still in the process of trying to figure it out.
"That's nerve-wracking, because you'd like to know exactly what you're going to be able to do in the running game, exactly what you're going to be able to do in the passing game, and you'd like to be repping the heck out of it at this point. But, we're not there yet."
One thing Fedora does know is what he's got in Brewer. On preseason watch lists for most of the major awards, the senior from Austin has thrown for 7,742 yards and 51 touchdowns, added 885 yards and 18 TDs on the ground and led the Bears to just their third 11-win season in program history last year.
"What I've noticed from Charlie is he's a heck of a leader," Fedora said. "He cares about his team, he cares about his teammates, he does not want to let anybody down. He's not real vocal in what he does, but he has great respect from his teammates. And, I would say he's a winner. . . . There are a lot of things I have to worry about, but I'm not worrying about him."
Brewer said the offense that Fedora has installed is similar to the offense he ran in high school, when he led Lake Travis to a 30-2 record and back-to-back state championship game appearances his final two seasons.
"We're going to play with a lot of tempo, we're going to play fast," he said. "The ball is going to be out of my hands quickly. We're still going to establish a run game and take a lot of shots down the field, so I think you're going to see some fast tempo and a lot of big plays. We've got the guys who can do it and I think we've got the system that will allow us to do that."
In addition to Brewer, the Bears are loaded at the skill positions with the senior duo of John Lovett and Trestan Ebner at running back and a deep receiving corps led by Tyquan Thornton, RJ Sneed, Josh Fleeks and Jared Atkinson.
Fedora labels Lovett and Ebner as complete backs that can catch the ball, run between the tackles or on the edge and are "strong enough to pick up blitzers."
"You don't have to worry about, do I need to take this guy out in this situation and put this guy in?" Fedora said. "You can play either of those guys any way you want to play them, and that makes it nice that you've got guys that can do multiple things back there. There are instances where we can be in formations that have more than one back on the field and do different things with them to create mismatches against the defense."
Brewer said fourth-year sophomore Gavin Holmes is the "forgotten" man at receiver, "because he's been out the past few years" with knee injuries. Since making four starts as a true freshman in 2017, Holmes has played in just one game the last two seasons.
"That's a guy who is really going to come on the scene," Brewer said. "I think all around, we've got a really strong group at receiver."
Unable to go through spring workouts because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fedora said the coaches have to "think outside the box" in getting ready for a 10-game regular season. The Bears open Big 12 play on Sept. 26 with a home game against Kansas at McLane Stadium.
"In the past, we've been able to do this, this and this. Now, do we need to cut that back to just this?" Fedora said. 'And if we're only going to cut back to just this, how do we get it done without the other this and this? You just put together a plan, you explain it to your guys, you get them to believe in the plan, and then you do the best job you can."
