Just a few days after the Big Ten unveiled a revised 2020 conference-only schedule, reports emerged that the league was scrapping the season altogether. Earlier on Monday, several reports indicated that the Big Ten presidents were leaning towards postponing the 2020 football season until the spring. In response, a number of players and staff nationwide began voicing their opinions as part of the “We Want to Play” movement, including Ohio State head coach Ryan Day.
The Buckeyes coach posted a direct message of his support on Twitter: “Swinging as hard as we possibly can for these players right now. This isn’t over. FIGHT!” On Monday evening, Day made an appearance on ESPN’s College Football Live, advocating for his players and the 2020 college football season.
“Well, it certainly caught me off guard with the schedule out last week and the schedule was designed to have some flexibility,” Day said. “And I just think that our job is to create the safest environment possible for these young men. And then present it to them and allow the players and their parents and their coaches to then decide if it’s safe enough. But because this schedule has provided some flexibility, I think we need to certainly not cancel the season."
When asked if Ohio State would consider competing outside the Big Ten conference, Day said that every option for playing the 2020 season would be considered, reiterating what's best for his players should take precedent.
“We need to look at every option and if that’s the only option at the time, we need to explore it and see if that’s something that we can possibly do” Day said. “If it is and that’s what’s best for our kids, then certainly we need to look at that and do it.”
Speaking virtually to media members last week, Day made it clear that he trusts in what has been done at Ohio State and was looking forward to leading his Buckeye team in battle this fall.
“I’m comfortable with us starting training camp,” Day said. “I still think that in order to play a game, not yet. Not yet. I think the Big Ten did a wonderful job of laying out some of the stuff that, as we get into the competitive season, some of the details and protocols moving forward, but certainly there are more details to be ironed out before we go play that first game.
“But I am very comfortable with what we have going on here going into training camp. Our protocols and procedures that we shared with our team, with our coaching staff and then with our parents. I think that is really well thought out and there’s been a lot of back-and-forth there and we feel strong about that. But I would say right now we’re not quite ready to play a game yet. But I know the Big Ten and the commissioner’s office is working really hard right now to put all those details together so we all can feel strong when we get a lot of those details. But yesterday (the release of the schedule) was a great step forward for us.”
Ohio State is currently scheduled to open the 2020 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 at Illinois. The Buckeyes began preseason camp last Friday.
