Instead of letting a pandemic cancel its annual charity fundraising event, Smyrna Rotary improvised with a "drive-by" format for this year's Wings of Freedom Fish Fry on Saturday.
Cars lined up on the road in front of the Smyrna Airport for curbside meals instead of gathering inside a hangar.
"It looks different this year, but we're making it successful," said Amanda Johnstone, Smyrna Rotary Club president.
The goal this year was $125,000, and Johnstone said she would be "over the moon excited (if the goal was met)."
This year the club plans to give the biggest portion of funds raised to build an all-inclusive playground that should be ready sometime in 2021. Johnstone said they hope to break ground by the end of 2020.
Proceeds from the fish fry also benefit local nonprofits like the Boys and Girls Clubs of Rutherford County and Nourish Food Bank.

Since 2003, Smyrna Rotary has raised $1.4 million for local charities.
"Organizations that benefit the most need our help more than ever. Many of these organizations have really stepped up and filled the needs of the community. We knew if we canceled the event, it would have devastating effects on other people," Johnstone said. "We couldn't let our organizations down."
The event always spotlights veterans. But because of COVID-19, there was a virtual presentation honoring World War II and Korean veterans, including video interviews.
