Erwin, N.C. — It's hard to score nine unanswered goals in one soccer match. Especially in a match where you never hit the nine-goal mercy rule.
Especially in a match where you trailed with minutes left in the first half.
But Freedom Christian of Fayetteville did just that on Tuesday, scoring one goal before half and then eight more in the second to take home a 10-3 victory.
The Patriots trailed 2-1 at one point in the first half, despite having a man advantage over Cape Fear Christian after the host Eagles went a man down with an early red card for player dissent.
Then came the goals.
Freedom Christian scored in the 54th minute, the 55th minute, the 59th minute, the 62nd minute, the 68th minute, the 73rd minute, the 77th minute, and the 78th minute.
That's a three-goals-in-five-minute streak, which was part of a four-goals-in-eight-minutes run, followed by a four-goals-in-10-minutes tour de force, which included a second three-goals-in-five-minutes outburst.
Cape Fear Christian, refusing to go quietly into the afternoon, scored in the 79th minute, continuing the madness but stopping the skid.
Reynaldo Molina had a game-high four goals.
Connor Jacobs had three goals and one assist.
Nathan Lawson, Coleman Burns, and Antonio Guajardo had one goal apiece.
Burns, Gabriel Kelley, Lyrik Thompson, and Jacob Thomas each had one assist each.
Freedom Christian is now 4-1 in both its overall and its conference record. The Patriots have not been able to find nonconference opponents thus far, the manifestation of yet another COVID-created monkey wrench that's been thrown into the plans for this season.
Cape Fear Christian, now at 0-4 overall and in conference play, was playing its second game in as many days — its third in six days and fourth in eight days.
The Eagles' three goals were scored by cousins Dolan Adams (two) and Luke Adams (one). Luke Adams also added one assist while Jackson Breslin had two.
