HOBART – The General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum, along with the Hobart community, is hosting its 12th annual Celebration of Freedom in conjunction with Hobart Main Street’s Hometown Harvest and Hobart Bearcats Homecoming today in downtown Hobart.
As previously reported, the annual Celebration of Freedom, which typically takes place over Memorial Day weekend, has been moved to this weekend due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Today's highlights include the Lil’ Miss & Mr. Harvest Pageant at noon, and the local talent showcase starts at 1 p.m. at the Courthouse Square Gazebo. Children’s free activities open in downtown Hobart at 1 p.m., including free train rides. Shopping and food vendors will also be on site throughout the day.
Matthew Sims will be at the Stanley Building from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. selling signed copies of his new book, “Why My Heart is Purple,” his story as a combat medic in Iraq.
Today's afternoon and evening activities, include the parade, featuring Mike York as grand marshal starting at 4:30 p.m.; a corn hole competition and car show starting at 5 p.m.; the motorcycle show-n-shine competition starting at 5:30 p.m.; and live music starting at 6:30 p.m.
A street dance and live music from Ambush, a country rock band, starts at 7:30 p.m. The grand opening of Emerson Field and championship softball game starts at 8 p.m.
New this year is the virtual silent auction supporting the General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum’s educational programming. The auction continues through 5 p.m. Sunday. The auction includes many one-of-a-kind items including exclusive event tickets, celebrity memorabilia, vacation getaways, art, livestock and more.
