Freedom 45, Bethlehem Catholic 0 – Rapid Recap
What was billed as a ranked rivalry showdown turned into a one-sided rout on Saturday afternoon.
Freedom, ranked fourth by lehighvalleylive.com, crushed No. 6 Bethlehem Catholic 45-0 in a mercy-rule victory during Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Northampton Division action at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium.
Turning point: Golden Hawks quarterback Jared Richardson was injured on the first play of his team’s second offensive series. That drive ended with Freedom linebacker Marcus Kreidler blocking a punt by Richardson, grabbing the bouncing ball and going 40 yards for the game’s opening touchdown.
That was Richardson’s last play of the afternoon.
Later, the Patriots took over at midfield with 1:50 remaining in the second quarter and needed just 1 minute and 26 seconds to score thanks to an efficient two-minute drill. Freedom quarterback Ethan Neidig hit Quin Hoke for a 9-yard TD, pushing the lead to 17-0 before the break.
The second half was all Freedom, which triggered the mercy rule when Deante Crawford’s 1-yard touchdown run, on the second play of the fourth quarter, made it 38-0.
Top performers: Matty Russin took 26 carries for 124 yards and one touchdown. Neidig completed 8 of 10 passes for 115 yards and a score, and ran for a TD.
Kreidler made several big plays, including the aforementioned blocked punt return and a strip sack in the third quarter. Patriots two-way lineman Braelin Moore had two fumble recoveries while helping his team control the trenches.
What it means: Freedom moves to 3-1 and is one step away from the city championship. The Patriots play winless Liberty next week.
Becahi moves to 3-2 with a rivalry clash against Allentown Central Catholic (3-2) on deck.
Freedom has beaten the Golden Hawks five times in a row. Becahi’s last win vs. the Patriots came in 2013.
