Saturday afternoon’s rivalry football game between Liberty and Freedom is off due to a COVID-19 case on the Hurricanes coaching staff, according to the Liberty athletic department.
The two teams were scheduled to meet 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium, but Liberty is unable to practice or play as its coaches quarantine.
When the game will find a makeup date is unclear. More information will be released at a later date, according to Liberty athletic director Fred Harris.
Freedom (3-1) has qualified for the District 11 Class 6A playoffs, which begin next week (Nov. 6). District 11, which is not participating in the PIAA football tournament this fall, has encouraged teams not active in the postseason to schedule games through Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 27-28). The District 11 6A final is scheduled for Nov. 20. Liberty (0-4) has not qualified for districts.
Liberty-Freedom is the second of Saturday’s rivalry games to be scrapped due to the pandemic. The Wilson-Notre Dame contest is also off after a Crusaders player tested positive for COVID-19.
Wilson will now meet Bishop Shanahan on Saturday, according to an update to Bishop Shanahan’s online schedule.
